2019 BLACK GIRLS LEAD Application

BLACK GIRLS LEAD (BGL) is a five-day residential conference for girls ages 13-17 held in New York City from July 28-August 2, 2019. The BGL conference provides its participants with the opportunity to engage in culturally relevant pedagogy, enhance their civic awareness, develop their leadership skills and foster a global sisterhood in a safe and welcoming environment. This summer intensive welcomes participants from across the globe and features a series of panels, lectures, and workshops designed to fortify critical thinking, entrepreneurship, social awareness, financial literacy, college preparation, professional goals, creativity, and more.

GENERAL INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS ARE GIRLS WHO:

  • Are 13-17 years old
  • 12th graders/2019 graduating seniors are not eligible to apply
  • Are in good academic standing
  • Are actively seeking to develop leadership skills
  • Are concerned about issues impacting Black women and girls
  • Are interested in the African Diaspora: its arts, histories, and cultures

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

  • Application and required supplemental documents are ALL due by Friday, May 17, 2019 at 11:59 pm Eastern Time.
    • Mandatory $25 non-refundable application fee
  • Applicants will be notified of application decisions by Monday, June 10, 2019.

FEES

The BLACK GIRLS LEAD Conference is FREE to accepted applicants. This includes, but not limited to: a full week of meals, (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks), workshops, lectures, panels, field trips, and other activities.

ALL ACCEPTED PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO STAY ON CAMPUS. If accepted, please be advised that there is a mandatory campus housing fee of $1000, due on or before Monday, July 7, 2019.

    • Have a teacher, school guidance counselor or mentor provide a recommendation letter on your behalf. All recommendation letters must be written on official letterhead and include the contact information of the recommender.

    • Please upload a private, password-protected Vimeo or private, unlinked YouTube video; share the password in your application in the designated field (if the video is not private your application will not be accepted)

2019 BGL APPLICATION QUESTIONS

GUIDELINES:

  • Short answer question response should be thoughtful, descriptive and comprehensive
  • It is recommended that applicants draft answers on a separate document for your records before submitting to form
  • Video blog should be no more than 3 minutes long with clear audio and visuals

What is the age eligibility to participate in the BLACK GIRLS LEAD Conference?

Eligible participants are girls between ages 13-17 who are currently enrolled in grades 8–12 (public, private, parochial, home school, etc.). Graduating seniors in the class of 2019 are NOT eligible to apply.

When and where will the BLACK GIRLS LEAD Conference be hosted?

The BLACK GIRLS LEAD conference will be held in New York City from July 28-August 2, 2019. Conference location will be disclosed to accepted applicants.

What programs and activities are offered at the BLACK GIRLS LEAD Conference?

The action-packed forward-thinking BLACK GIRLS LEAD Conference features workshops, master classes, lectures and empowerment panels on media and cultural literacy, business, entrepreneurship, arts, social action, technology, financial literacy, and more. What is included in this conference?

Is BLACK GIRLS LEAD an overnight conference?

Yes, BLACK GIRLS LEAD is an overnight residential conference. Housing has been reserved for accepted applicants and a mandatory campus housing cost of $1000 is due on or before Monday, July 7, 2019.

Are parents/guardians permitted to attend the conference?

No. Parents/guardians are not permitted to attend the conference. Conference attendance is limited to participants and staff only.

Will there be supervision for the BLACK GIRLS LEAD conference participants throughout the day and night?

Yes. The conference site is managed by highly qualified BLACK GIRLS LEAD staff. All members of the BGL team are screened and trained to provide quality care for admitted participants. In addition to campus security, BLACK GIRLS LEAD staff, counselors and staff are stationed throughout on campus during program hours and overnight hours. Overnight staff have completed CPR training and national and federal background checks.

Is there an application fee?

Yes. The $25 non-refundable application fee is required for all applicants. Pay the non-refundable application fee ($25) via the link here and or at the completion of the application.

Is there a PDF version of the application?

Yes, however, all applications must be electronically submitted via the link and application form provided. It is recommended that applicants use the PDF to outline, draft and save your answers before submission.

If you are experiencing technical difficulties uploading video blog to the application form, please upload your video to vimeo. Then, place the link (and password if applicable) into a word document. Finally, upload the word document in the video’s place. If you continue to have difficulty, please notify the BGL team and plan to submit your application via ground mail or e-mail in entirety. If you elect to email your application, please send it to [email protected]blackgirlsrock.org.
