Odetta Holmes is one of the most beloved figures in folk music! Her affinity for traditional African American folk songs led to her being an important figure in the American folk music revival that took place in the 1950s and 1960s. She was said to have influenced the emergence of artists as varied as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and Tracy Chapman. Holmes was also a civil rights activist and dedicated most of her music to the cause of black equality—so much so, that her music has frequently been called the “soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement”. Harry Belafonte cited that Holmes was a key influence on his musical career and Martin Luther King Jr. called her the “queen of American folk music”. #Herstory #BlackGirlsRock
