We celebrate Women’s History every day at BGR!
#BlackGirlLit: Today we highlight someone that has worked very closely with Black Girls Rock! Vice President and Publisher of 37Ink, Dawn Davis.
Since launching 37Ink, an imprint of Atria, in April 2013, Dawn Davis has published the National Book Award long-listed Heads of the Colored People by Nafissa Thompson-Spires, the National Book Award finalist, Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge, the national bestseller Heart Talk by internationally recognized poet and artist Cleo Wade, several New York Times bestsellers, including The Butler: A Witness to History by Wil Haygood, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae, whose show, Insecure, received award recognition in its first season, and I Can’t Make This Up by Kevin Hart.
For twelve years prior to joining Atria, she had been at HarperCollins, directing the Amistad imprint, where she published numerous well-known, highly acclaimed bestselling authors, including Edward P. Jones, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Known World.
Our own DJ Beverly Bond had the pleasure of working with Davis for the publishing of Black Girls Rock!: Owning Our Magic. Rocking Our Truth.
In a recent book talk during the BGR!Fest at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Bond thanked Davis for challenging her to complete this book. She also remembered having been extremely inspired and grateful to have had the opportunity to interview some of her idols, like activist, Angela Davis through the book’s development process.
For being an inspiration to black and brown girls, and for providing the opportunity for so many people of color to share their stories with the world, Dawn Davis, we salute you. #womenshistorymonth
